Sometimes we need a break…
A break from all of the craziness of our everyday lives. We look for vacations that are a bit off the beaten path or perhaps a little “less ordinary.” If you find yourself seeking something different than the typical road trip, consider these locations for your next family trip.
The Museum of Bad Art: Dedham, Massachusetts
Founded in 1993 this little museum is located in the basement of the Dedham Square Community Theater in Dedham, Massachusetts. The one-of-a-kind collection celebrates bad art in every form possible. Though the space can only display 30-40 pieces at a time, the collection is nearly 400 pieces of intentionally horrid art. This means that visitors can come numerous times and never see the same piece twice.
Tinkertown Museum: Sandia Park, New Mexico
Ross Wood has spent more than 40 years gathering glass bottles and carving wooden objects to create this folk art museum. What began as a hobby in 1962 as a miniature wood-carved figure traveling caravan is now a 22-room museum with over 50,000 glass bottles and carvings. This eccentric collection of carvings fills hallways and display rooms throughout the Tinkertown display. The location is a fluid work in progress with new pieces added frequently.
Lucy the Margate Elephant: Margate, New Jersey
For nearly 100 years this giant wood and tin elephant has been a much-loved tourist attraction in Margate, New Jersey. Her popularity is second only to the casinos and the nearby boardwalk of Atlantic City. Lucy started her life in New York City’s Coney Island amusement park, once housed a family and has spent time as a restaurant and later as a bar. In the 1960s, the landmark piece began to deteriorate and was moved to her permanent location where she was restored to her former glory. Since then she was declared a National Historic Landmark and has been open for tours of her interior. The 65-foot-tall monument offers incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean from atop her back.
This is but a small list of the unique vacation locations available to you across the United States. Hit the road and explore the wacky world of vacation wonders that await you.
